This trail was the medieval route linking two major historic centers in Italy, Assisi (view a video of Assisi; “Things to see in Assisi”) and Gubbio (view video of Gubbio Ceri Festival), located in Umbria.
The trail, named after Saint Francis, who used to walk this route in the 13th century, offers hikers the possibility to visit castles, churches, and medieval settlements, located in the gorgeous countryside of Umbria.

This tour of Umbria features places that could be ideal destinations for day trips from Rome.
First the Etruscan (and Medieval) town of Orvieto, then the hill town of Todi. North of Todi, there is the town of Deruta, one of the world capitals of ceramics, well known for its production of refined maiolica.

Perugia, final destination, is a major universitary center and the capital of Umbria. It offers a lot of Medieval and Etruscan sights.
